Amazon.co.uk Review Whatever your general musical preferences may be, this enchanting handful of all time singalong hits is bound to put a smile on your face, whether it's a modernist ironic smirk or a nostalgic simper in reminiscence of the time when men were men and women were women (and Pacific women, especially Pacific women ...) One or two other recordings of the South Pacific stage version are competing on the market, but they are profoundly outdone by these 1958 film sessions in documenting the original, warm-hearted vinyl vitality of the classic wartime romance. The movie deservedly won an Academy Award for achievements in sound, and truly in the Rodgers and Hammerstein spirit, the close-mic mono feel and atmosphere of the 20th Century-Fox studios is retained on the remastered CD version. A virtual gold mine for showstopper-hunters in all walks of musical life, this feel-good celebration of naive optimism and romance is an all time best buy. Younger film scorers "sample" at leisure from Richard Rodgers' lush string arrangements, top DJs have been known to stick the "Bali Ha'i" flourishes in the mix on the dance floor, and "Younger Than Springtime" and "Some Enchanted Evening" never leave the repertoire of the great stage show singers. South Pacific is quite simply, a classic. --Yngvil V.G.
Amazon.co.uk Review Released to massive acclaim and a Pulitzer Prize in 1949, this has remained one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's all-time revered musicals (closely following--chronologically and favourably--both Oklahoma! and Carousel). It took nearly a decade to reach the silver screen, but audiences seemed to appreciate it and this album all the more. There have been several releases of the material before, but this is the Oscar-nominated film soundtrack, carefully overseen for CD-quality playback. It's sometimes amazing to be reminded just how many popular ditties can belong to one production. Now, with no fear of crackle or hiss, you can sing along to the immortal greats: "Some Enchanted Evening", "There is Nothin' Like a Dame", "Bali Ha'i", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Happy Talk". They are all backed by some tremendous underscore conducted by Golden-Age wonder Alfred Newman. The Overture makes for a high-spirited introduction to the idyllic world of Nelly, Emile, Lt Cable, and Liat. --Paul Tonks
